Dolphin-watching tours in the İstanbul Strait with BRIDGE-BS

In collaboration with Beykoz Municipality and the District Directorate of National Education, the BRIDGE-BS partner TUDAV organized dolphin and bird-watching cruises as the main activity for primary school students. These schools are located away from the coast, so the children usually do not have the opportunity to go on a boat at sea. Most of them had never seen dolphins before. The goal was to provide the children with firsthand experience observing Black Sea biodiversity, focusing on dolphins and seabirds, and to encourage them to think about protecting these species from threats such as pollution and bycatch.

From May 23 to June 8, 2023, a total of 98 students from five primary schools, accompanied by eight teachers, participated in these tours. Prior to the cruises, TUDAV gave a presentation on the Black Sea ecosystem and safety measures on board. Additionally, a detailed booklet about the Black Sea and the Istanbul Strait, including information on local species and the threats they face, was distributed to the children.

The students had the chance to closely observe and learn about the dolphin and bird species that are an important part of the marine biodiversity in the area. Most of them saw dolphins at sea for the first time and quickly learned their names, recording their observations. BRIDGE-BS helped the students develop environmental awareness and become conscious individuals regarding sustainability and natural life. Accompanying teachers also gained valuable experience with nature in the Strait, which can further benefit their students in the future.
