We want every Black Sea citizen
to become Ocean Literate!

“An ocean literate society understands the impact that individuals and communities have on the ocean and the impact
that the ocean has on our lives and well-being. More than just a concept,
Ocean Literacy is a fundamental means to enhance
ocean knowledge, build connections in people’s lives, and support and encourage citizens and stakeholders to act in a positive
way for our Ocean. Ocean literacy is a way to advance sustainable practices, develop policy, promote responsible
citizenship, and encourage young people to be involved in shaping the future. Ocean literacy is essential to protect
the ocean for future generations”

Definition by the European Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA)

BRIDGE-BS establishes an Ocean Literacy Network
for the first time in the Black Sea Basin!

It is built to develop ownership and stewardship for the protection of the Black Sea.

This Network brings together marine scientists, educators, and ocean professionals.

It serves a knowledge base for anyone who is enthusiastic and curious about the Black Sea.

ABOUT OCEAN LITERACY

The Ocean Literacy concept was introduced in Europe a decade ago. However, many organizations and individuals in the Black Sea countries have a longer history of teaching about their sea and engaging communities.

Lack of information on Ocean Literacy Initiatives at the Black Sea Basin precludess effective collaboration and sharing of best practices among educators. To address this issue, EMSEA is working, as part of the BRIDGE-BS project, on inventorying, documenting and mapping ongoing and recent Ocean Literacy projects and initiatives in the Black Sea Basin that began in 2012 or later.

Information about such teaching and engagement activities, which we collectively refer to as the Ocean Literacy Initiatives, is sporadic and hardly obtainable because it has never been inventoried consistently.

Based on identified Ocean Literacy projects and initiatives we will build the Black Sea Literacy Network, through various team-building and stakeholder engagement strategies.

Join the Black Sea Ocean Literacy Network!

Joining the Black Sea Literacy Network also connects you with the EMSEA Community. Together, we can amplify Ocean Literacy in the Black Sea region and inspire a sustainable future for the sea we love.

The Black Sea Literacy Network is a growing community, advancing Ocean Literacy in the Black Sea region. We bring together organizations, educators, researchers, policymakers, community leaders, and industry stakeholders committed to sustainable ocean practices and promoting knowledge and stewardship of the Black Sea.

The Black Sea Literacy Network serves as a collaborative platform for exchanging knowledge, resources, and best practices across sectors and countries. Through partnerships, events, and educational initiatives, we aim to raise awareness and drive action to protect the Black Sea. Whether you are an educator, policymaker, researcher, or industry professional, your role in promoting Ocean Literacy is invaluable.

The Black Sea Literacy Network offers unique benefits:

Collaboration, Knowledge Exchange, and Networking: Connect with educators, scientists, and advocates dedicated to Black Sea sustainability. Share ideas and collaborate on initiatives that foster ocean-friendly practices.

Access to Resources: Utilize a growing pool of tools, guides, and training tailored to the Black Sea region. Stay informed about Ocean Literacy projects, research, policy developments, and educational strategies.

Opportunities for Impact: Contribute to shaping a sustainable future for the Black Sea through activities such as beach cleanups, awareness campaigns, and policy advocacy.

We welcome schools, universities, research centers, NGOs, visitor centers, marine protected areas, museums, government bodies, private sector entities, and individuals interested in the marine environment. Whether experienced in Ocean Literacy or new to the concept, your participation is vital to building a diverse and impactful network.

Online Directory of the Black Sea Literacy Initiatives is a product of
ongoing research and we continuously update the data.

There is more to come.
