Professor in Applied Marine Ecology and Integrated Aquaculture (BOF)

Marine Living Resources and Aquaculture
Ghent

Job
Application deadline 08th January 2026
University of Ghent
The vacancy is situated within the Department of Animal Sciences and Aquatic Ecology of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering and is part of the strategic strengthening of the synergy between aquatic ecology, aquaculture and the blue economy. The new BOF-TT mandate "Applied Marine Ecology and Integrated Aquaculture" forms the bridge between the aquatic-ecological and aquaculture parts of the department and is complementary to the existing expertise within the Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center (ARC), the Blue Growth Research Lab (BGRL) and Marine@UGent. The assignment mainly includes research into integrated and sustainable use of marine ecosystems, with a focus on ecological interactions, system thinking and the interaction between aquatic production systems and their environment. In addition, the mandate includes a relatively limited teaching assignment in the field of Applied Marine Ecology and Integrated Aquaculture, with a focus on sustainable aquaculture systems and the ecological interactions between aquatic organisms. The declaration of vacancy is motivated by the need to strengthen the marine ecology and aquaculture pillar within the department following some retirements, and by the ambition to achieve a structural integration between aquaculture and marine ecology in research, education and services, in line with the Ghent University developments in Ostend and the international expansion of Marine@UGent.

Application deadline 30th November 2025
Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research
In this PhD position, you will build ecosystem models to study how the formation of tidal creeks influences tidal wetland conditions, affecting species growth and diversity, and confront the model with an empirical study of habitat development in the Biesbosch and/or the Oude Maas. You will study how historical changes along the Rhine-Meuse estuary, from a semi-natural inland-delta to a strongly constrained current-day “grienden”-wetlands, affected estuarine conditions (tidal and salt gradients) and landscape development. You will use the models to help restore endangered flood forest habitats along the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt estuaries.

BRIDGE-BS project
The Horizon 2020-funded BRIDGE-BS (Advancing Black Sea Research and Innovation to Co-Develop Blue Growth within Resilient Ecosystems) aims to advance the Black Sea’s marine research and innovation to co-develop Blue Economy pathways under multiple stressors for the sustainable utilization of the ecosystem services. The 4.5-year project will end in November 2025. Clustering around three main nodes, including Service Dynamics, Blue Growth Incubators, and Empowered Citizens, BRIDGE-BS used pilot study sites at the local level, with findings contributing to interconnected work packages addressing the four pillars of the Black Sea Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (Black Sea SRIA). This way, BRIDGE-BS strives to achieve “a healthy, resilient and productive Black Sea by 2030” with awareness of the seriousness of the threat posed by the increasing human-induced pressures on the Black Sea. The BRIDGE-BS project generated a new breakthrough in the understanding of the healthy planetary boundaries of a marine ecosystem. The project successfully demonstrated cutting-edge smart monitoring technologies, marine modelling simulating climate scenarios, and first-time resilience and cumulative impact assessments. Co-developed with communities through living labs, BRIDGE-BS paved a new way forward that secures a safe operating environmental space for a sustainable Blue Economy. In the Final Conference of BRIDGE-BS, we will showcase the project’s key achievements, highlight its legacy for the Black Sea region, showcase the Black Sea DTO-demonstrator, and bring together policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders to discuss the future of sustainable blue economy cooperation.
