The European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC-ERIC) is seeking a motivated data scientist to participate in recently won Horizon Europe projects on marine biodiversity and biodiversity observation.

Purpose of a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) Exchange visits between researchers involved in a COST Action, allowing scientists to visit an institution or laboratory in another COST Member state. The aim is to foster collaboration in excellent research infrastructures and share new techniques that may not be available in a participant’s home institution or laboratory related to Blue Biotechnology.

This year’s theme is, “The Midpoint of the SDGs: Global and Local Progress & Challenges”. ICSD 2023 will be hybrid. Events on September 18th (side events) and 19th (parallel sessions and abstract presentations) will take place virtually. The high-level segment on September 20th can be attended virtually, or in person at Alfred Lerner Hall on the Columbia University Campus in New York City.

Two of the following four themes will be funded, depending on candidate quality: - Machine Learning approaches for the Analysis of Marine Ecosystem indicators - Twilight Zone & endangered oceanic filter-feeding elasmobranchs - Ecosystem Services considerations into integrated ecosystem assessments #IEA using a functional trait-based approach - Coastal fish communities in the oceanic archipelagoes of the Atlantic Ocean The right candidates will be co-supervised by a team of pan-Atlantic senior scientists, and your scientific research will contribute directly to better management of our oceans.

Our studies are especially close to the research object, which you will touch in the laboratories – whether it is a molecule of a microbe, or a menu of wintering birds. You may have to get into water yourself while analyzing the habitats of the seabed or the behaviour of marine mammals. You will gain both theory and practice from the specialists of the field. While studying biology and marine biotechnology you will gain valuable practical skills and special, social, and personal competences, which will assist you in the pursuit of your further life goals. Three years in the laboratory is a solid practical preparation to work in a wide range of areas.

This is an intensive programme (30h training) with general lectures focused on the carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems, so-called Blue Carbon, but also field and experimental demonstrations of C budgets measurements. This training is certified by the University of Lille, allowing participants to obtain a certificate corresponding to a 30h training (ECTS Doctoral credits). Specific questions that will be addressed during the Blue Carbon Summer School 2023 : What is Blue Carbon ? How to calculate accurate C budgets ? Methodology (C Flux at the sediment-water interface, immersion, emersion) with field trip (estuary) & Lab. Demonstrations (benthic chambers, microsensors, flux measurements) Carbon Budgets in tidal marsh, mangroves, seagrasses, seaweeds From small scales to large scale (e.g., Teledetection, Blue Carbon and global change, Blue transformation UN 2030) How can we turn towards Blue Carbon in the near future ?
