ScienceDIVER invites researchers, scholars, practitioners, students and all relevant stakeholders to an exchange of views and suggestions about the current challenges and future of scientific diving. The conference will focus on the educational approaches, operational challenges and occupational modes of scientific diving with the aim to raise awareness and generate a discussion among all interested parties about the training standards, professional recognition and mobility of scientific divers. The conference aims to present initiatives and proposals, including the proposed ScienceDIVER roadmap towards the establishment of a common framework for scientific diving.

The European Marine Board (EMB) Ambassador Programme, established in 2019, is a two-year programme aiming to increase awareness and engagement from early career scientists in current marine science-policy topics in Europe. The Early Career Ambassadors represent the opinions, attitudes, and needs of early career researchers (including the EMB ECOP Network) in the marine science field and their perspectives are thus seen as valuable inputs to EMB activities. Through this initiative, EMB helps early career researchers to make their voices heard within EMB’s activities and the EU policy landscape to help create and shape the ocean leaders of tomorrow. Our fifth cycle will start in April 2023, and EMB is looking for two enthusiastic, engaged, and creative Ambassadors that are willing to play an important role in advocating for EMB and promoting the societal and political relevance of the marine natural sciences, marine social sciences, humanities, and the Ocean, within their own communities, and to a wide diversity of stakeholders. The two new Ambassadors will collaborate and liaise with our current Ambassadors and recent Alumni to share experiences and ideas, and work together on activities, i.e. the EMB ECOP Network and EMB ECOP Wednesdays.

MISSION ATLANTIC Mobility Call 2023 invites applications for 6 weeks mobility stays hosted at our project partner institutions, for exchange of best practice & capacity building on Integrated Ecosystem Assessment (IEA) research. Researchers (from early career to senior staff) and other professional, with critical contributions towards IEA implementation at #AllAtlantic basin scale, are invited to work on short projects directly relevant to IEA and the MISSION ATLANTIC Project (see project website and Open Proposal for technical detail).

The theme of the PhD position is the physiological, behavioural, and evolutionary responses of fishes to temperature. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim Norway is seeking a new graduate student (PhD studentship) to research thermal biology in fish. The position starts in first half of 2023. Common responses of fishes to climate warming include migration, acclimatization, and adaptation. This project will investigate both the acclimatisation and adaptation potential of fishes to changes in water temperature. The PhD project aims to fill major knowledge gaps in the field of thermal biology.

In the frame of the newborn National Biodiversity Future Center, funded by the Italian Ministry for University and Research through the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan and coordinated by the National Research Center (CNR), we are looking for an enthusiastic candidate interested in working on biodiversity mainstreaming in MSP. Code 01 - 1 staff unit at CNR Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMAR) - Venice headquarters, Research Activities: Scientific and technological research activities in marine spatial planning. Experience Required: Environmental multistressor assessment and ecosystem-based approaches for marine spatial planning, conservation planning and management of natural resources; Social-ecological approaches to planning and management and implementation of marine policies; Data analysis and design, development and application of geospatial decision support systems; Preferable experienced in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Mathlab, R, JavaScript frameworks for interactive applications and web mapping.

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, experienced deck hand / boatswain with a passion for the environment to join our small, friendly team supporting marine research scientists in their work, including data collection. In addition to hands-on marine deck work you will be involved in mechanical and electrical maintenance activities, you will get involved in supporting the development of innovative new marine technologies including autonomous vehicles, computer based marine systems and green energies. You will need to be physically fit spending up to 3 – 4 days a week at sea on our research vessel, the Plymouth Quest (22m) and will be required to undertake the MCA Approved Engine Certificate 1 (AEC1). Starting Salary: Level 5, starting salary in the region of £25,000 dependent on experience.

Oceana is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the world’s oceans. Oceana’s campaigns are directed at achieving measurable improvements in public policy. The Campaign Associate works as part of Oceana’s U.S. Plastics Campaign to protect the oceans from plastic pollution by reducing the production and use of unnecessary single-use plastic. The Campaign Associate conducts policy research and analysis, develops internal and external campaign materials, conducts outreach to key constituencies, plans and implements projects, and tracks campaign activities and other action on plastic pollution. The Campaign Associate also leads the planning and execution of strategic campaign events such as fly-ins. The Campaign Associate also facilitates collaboration and coordination across science, policy, communications, legal, and grassroots parts of Oceana’s campaign model. The Campaign Associate reports to the Plastics Campaign Director. The position is based in Washington, D.C. Occasional travel is required.

As a key member of the Science & Strategy team, the Fellow helps develop the scientific foundation for our work on ocean protection and climate change, collects and analyzes data, and prepares technical reports, to help achieve Oceana’s mission and drive our Save the Oceans, Feed the World initiative. The ideal candidate has a master’s degree in marine science or a related field and two years’ work experience (or equivalent qualifications) and has experience working and building relationships across different cultures and/or multiple disciplines/backgrounds. The Fellow will provide technical support on fisheries, habitat protection, and climate change, write, edit, and present materials for internal and external audiences, and contribute to the development of metrics for tracking progress in ocean conservation and climate change mitigation and adaptation to support Oceana’s campaign goals.

The ocean’s biodiversity supports the livelihoods of over three billion people, providing vital services, including food and nutrient cycling. The new NECCTON project external link involves 20 partners from across Europe and will enable the European Copernicus Marine Service external link (CMEMS) to deliver novel products that inform marine biodiversity conservation and food resources management. This is achieved by fusing new data into innovative ecosystem models that integrate biological and abiotic components, habitats, and stressors of marine ecosystems. The team at Utrecht University participates in the NECCTON work package that develops new modelling capability for the simulation of marine pollutants and stressors. We are looking for a postdoc researcher to support this work. In particular, you will develop new CMEMS products to map and forecast plastic pollution in marine ecosystems. You will coordinate the integration of the pollution codes for plastic and other pollutants developed by partner organisations. Furthermore, you will work with stakeholders to co-design a case study to map the sources of pollutants transported towards Mediterranean aquaculture farm areas.
