The "Biotechnology" Department is a department with traditions in the education of students in the field of biotechnology. In 1963, for the first time in Bulgaria, the UHT organized the training of students in the field of biotechnology, and at that time the specialty was called "Technology of biological preparations, vitamins, and yeasts". In 1973, the name of the specialty was changed to "Technology of Microbiological and Fermentation Products", and in 1984, after the approval of new curricula, a new direction was created - Biotechnology, including the new specialty "Technology of Bioproduction".

The primary objective of the department for advanced technologies in the field of molecular biology, genetics and biotechnology fields to make basic scientific research. For this purpose, capable of scientific thinking, develop interdisciplinary ideas, knowledge and technology are capable of generating, entrepreneurial, innovative, creative, targeted training of young researchers. Master’s program „Plant Biotechnologies“ offers its students a thorough preparation and profound knowledge in the wider aspects of biotechnology, focusing on the application of modern study and skills acquired from various biological disciplines. Certified Masters acquire knowledge and practical skills to apply classical and new technologies in the field of phytophysiology, molecular biology and biochemical practice; for preparing and implementing the scientific tasks and projects.

The program will provide an important grounding for students to understand and apply genetic, molecular genetic, and genomic tools to fundamental research questions in different areas: genetics, molecular genetics, genomics, molecular biology, medicine, biotechnology, and agriculture. It is designed to equip students to meet the growing requirement by academia, industry, and clinical practice for scientists, qualified in genetics, molecular genetics, and analysis of genomic data.

Graduates of the Master's program in Biophysics can continue their education at the next level of education - Ph.D. Due to the fact that biophysics is a fundamental biological science with a field of application in the various fields of animal biology, plant biology and microbiology, the acquired knowledge allows realization and career perspectives in appropriate educational and research institutions, such as the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgarian Agriculture Academy, medical universities, biomedical institutions dealing with fundamental and applied research; in specialized units related to human and veterinary medicine, pharmaceutical laboratories, in companies producing and distributing biomedical equipment; in enterprises engaged in biotechnological production, in human and veterinary medicine units; in agriculture; in environmental monitoring and protection systems, state and municipal environmental control bodies, etc.
