This internationally-leading joint EngD with ID CORE aims to meet the UK’s ambitious deployment targets for offshore renewable energy technologies. An EngD is a four-year research degree awarded for industrially relevant research, the degree provides a more vocationally oriented approach to obtaining a doctorate in engineering commensurate with that of a Ph.D. Led by the University of Exeter at its Cornwall Campus and based at the University of Edinburgh, this EngD programme is delivered through a partnership with the universities of Edinburgh, Strathclyde, and Exeter together with the Scottish Association for Marine Science and HR-Wallingford.

This MSc equips graduates of engineering and science degrees with the skills they need to join the rapidly growing offshore renewable energy industry, incorporating offshore wind, wave and tidal energy. You’ll learn how the disciplines of meteorology, aerodynamics, mechanical, control, electrical, structural and offshore engineering are utilised in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver a cost-effective offshore power station.

This 12-month taught postgraduate course introduces students with a first degree in the physical, mathematical or other numerate sciences to the subject of Marine Renewable Energy. As well as providing an overview of marine renewable energy, the course enables students to research in detail those aspects of the subject in which they are particularly interested. The course places particular emphasis on assessing the wave & tidal energy resources, and geophysical nature of sites, providing students with the necessary skills for marine renewable energy resources and site characterization from a theoretical, technical, and practical perspective.

Online MSc Decommissioning is part-time. (1) Train in all aspects of decommissioning on a degree accredited by the Energy Institute and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology. (2) Gain a broad range of knowledge and expertise in the physical process of taking offshore platforms out of service. Through this MSc, you’ll cover engineering, project management, business, law, health and safety, and environmental studies.

The MSc Offshore Engineering programme draws upon the School of Engineering's strengths in both subsea engineering and renewable energy engineering, to investigate modern applications of offshore engineering including marine renewables and subsea oil and gas. The programme is designed to be accessible to applicants from a wide range of engineering disciplines such as civil, petroleum or mechanical engineering, but also electrical and electronic engineers interested in a career in subsea controls. A unique strength of the MSc Offshore Engineering programme at Aberdeen is the inclusion of courses on marine renewables and marine environment impact assessments, alongside courses on subsea construction, which gives our graduates greater opportunities across the wider field of marine energy. In particular, this aspect of the programme appeals to engineers working within the subsea oil and gas industry, who are looking to diversify towards offshore renewable energy.

It gives you a much broader learning experience than many other Masters degrees in renewable energy. You’ll train as an engineer in all major renewable energy sources, including geothermal, solar, biomass, hydro, marine, and wind. You’ll learn to design, build and optimize the renewable energy infrastructure of the future. You’ll cover the theoretical knowledge and advanced technical skills you need as a renewables engineer. But you’ll also focus on the wider legislation, planning, and economics of renewables. You’ll graduate ready to run green energy projects safely, to budget, and on time.

The programme has been designed as a two-year Master’s course consisting of 3 semesters of full-time study (90 ECTS) plus a final semester of the Master thesis (30 ECTS) and is designed to allow specialization in these particular areas of marine energy. Different pathways are available, designed to provide in-depth knowledge in individual marine energy disciplines, defining two specializations: Specialization (A): “Renewable Offshore Energy Systems Engineering”.​​​​​​​ Specialization (B): “Power Electronics and Control for Offshore Renewable Energy Systems”

Heriot-Watt Online students in Marine Renewable Energy MSc undertake eight taught courses, MSc students are also required to complete a dissertation. Students must first take exams in two courses of the degree, Economics of Renewable Energy and Energy in the 21st Century. Based on the results from these courses students continue on the degree at MSc or at PG Diploma level. If a student can demonstrate that they have already mastered the subject, they may undertake a Development Project instead of one of these courses.
