Technical Assistance for Marine Aquaculture in the Open Ocean

Marine Living Resources and Aquaculture

Job
Application Deadline: 25 June 2023
Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI)
Global food security, human health and well-being are at serious jeopardy as marine resource production can no longer be sustained by ecosystems and natural fisheries production only. Broad evidence supports the potential of low trophic aquatic food to reduce food and nutrition insecurity in a changing climate, delivering essential ecosystem services and enabling achieving UN SDGs. Expansion of low trophic aquaculture (LTA) for increasing seafood production are faced with opportunities in unexploited regions and environments and maximizing benefits of marine space by considering low impact multi-use (MU) of space such as combining wind farm areas and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA). The main objective of OLAMUR is to bring together MU-LTA related key sectors, to demonstrate sustainable commercial solutions for both the North and the Baltic Sea. OLAMUR will focus on three pilots (Germany, Denmark, and Estonia) that will serve as testing and demonstration sites. Here, we focus on an aquaculture-offshore wind farm-multi-use-scenario in the German Bight next to Helgoland, to farm seaweed and bivalves in the open ocean.

Internship
The Kingfish Company
Candidates must be affiliated with an educational institution to be eligible for the internship. During your internship you will be part of the company's R&D Team. At the Kingfish Company we have integrated the full process of the production of our Dutch Yellowtail Kingfish, from egg to the plate. This process starts at our Hatchery, then via our Production facility to our Processing & Packaging plant. The Kingfish Company offers students the chance to gain practical experience in the field of aquaculture in RAS systems. For this particular internship you will be joining our R&D department, where you will you support a team of experienced colleagues and other interns. At any given time, the company has many R&D project running, including conducting (commercial) feeding trials, managing wastewater treatment pilots, developing protocols for broodstock transport, conducting research into the effect of environmental factors on the growth of our fish, etc. By partaking in these activities, this trainee internship will provide you with valuable applied and hands-on experience in conducting industrial research. You will learn about recirculating aquaculture systems and their management, general fish husbandry, fish handling, feeding, sampling requirement, data recording and keeping, biological water quality treatment, etc. You will have an in-depth experience of experimentation carried out in various departments (hatchery and grow-out) and related to various practical and commercial aspects affecting the aquaculture industry. In addition, you will obtain an understanding of industrial experimental designs.

The European Marine Board (EMB)
The European Marine Board (EMB) Ambassador Programme, established in 2019, is a two-year programme aiming to increase awareness and engagement from early career scientists in current marine science-policy topics in Europe. The Early Career Ambassadors represent the opinions, attitudes, and needs of early career researchers (including the EMB ECOP Network) in the marine science field and their perspectives are thus seen as valuable inputs to EMB activities. Through this initiative, EMB helps early career researchers to make their voices heard within EMB’s activities and the EU policy landscape to help create and shape the ocean leaders of tomorrow. Our fifth cycle will start in April 2023, and EMB is looking for two enthusiastic, engaged, and creative Ambassadors that are willing to play an important role in advocating for EMB and promoting the societal and political relevance of the marine natural sciences, marine social sciences, humanities, and the Ocean, within their own communities, and to a wide diversity of stakeholders. The two new Ambassadors will collaborate and liaise with our current Ambassadors and recent Alumni to share experiences and ideas, and work together on activities, i.e. the EMB ECOP Network and EMB ECOP Wednesdays.
